In the heart of downtown High Point, a new kind of stay has arrived. The SpringHill Suites by Marriott at Congdon Yards blends the comfort of modern hospitality with the craftsmanship, creativity, and community that define the city.

As designers deeply rooted in High Point, the Barbour Spangle Design team was honored to help bring the vision to life. Set within another building, originally built by Adams-Millis Hosiery in 1922, the hotel's interiors reflect the soul of our city. Where history meets innovation, and where every material, finish, and fixture tells a story of connection.

Designing a Sense of Place

From the beginning, our goal was to design a hotel that feels authentically High Point. We drew inspiration from the area's industrial heritage, the surrounding creative campus of Congdon Yards, and the energy that comes from being part of the global design hub.

Each element, from locally crafted furnishings to architectural details inspired by classic furniture making, was chosen to celebrate the spirit of craftsmanship that lives here. The result is a space that is at once refreshing, unexpected, and refined. Offering a warm, inviting experience for guests while honoring the city's creative roots.

Hospitality Meets Craft

The design narrative weaves together five key themes: Relax, Greet, Texture, Gather, and Meet. Creating spaces that invite connection and comfort. Guests are greeted by custom, locally made furnishings in the reception and lounge areas, surrounded by a palette of rich woods, deep blues, and warm textures.

Custom light features draw the eye upward, reflecting High Point's spirit of communication and connection. The linear lighting symbolizes High Point's status as the highest point on the North Carolina Railroad. The Meeting Room pays tribute to the Bienenstock Furniture Library, the world's largest specialty library for furniture, with a printed acoustical wallcovering produced by local manufacturer Splashworks. Additionally, the antique telephones in the mezzanine nooks pay homage to North State Communication.

Throughout the property, handcrafted details and bespoke millwork remind guests that they are staying in a city where design is more than an industry — it's a way of life.

A New Kind of Gathering Place

Beyond a hotel, the SpringHill Suites at Congdon Yards is designed as an extension of the creative community — a place where travelers, students, and locals can gather, work, and recharge.

From the Networking Zone's intimate booths to the mezzanine's privacy nooks framed by metal screens, the interiors foster both collaboration and reflection. Even the art gallery in the lounge area honors High Point's diverse industries — textiles, furniture, music, and communication — through a monochromatic installation of sculpted artifacts.

For extended stays or group visits, Studio Suites offer loft-inspired layouts featuring exposed brick, modern lighting, and locally sourced furnishings. The perfect combination of hospitality and home.

Our Connection to Congdon Yards

Designing for the Congdon Yards campus carries special meaning for us. It's a place built by and for creatives. A home for makers, dreamers, and designers. To have our work become part of this evolving story is a true honor.

We can't wait to share more photos soon, but for now, we're proud to share these concepts and glimpses from behind the design.
